BOSTON—Passengers heading into Boston from Logan International Airport will be getting a free ride this summer on the MBTA's Silver Line.

The pilot program starts Wednesday and continues through Sept. 3. Massport says it is offering the free service from the airport to South Station in an effort to improve curbside traffic at Logan and make best use of limited airport parking.

The program is a joint effort by the Massachusetts Port Authority, the MBTA, and the state transportation department.

The Silver Line started service in 2006. It's a key to efforts to increase ridership on high-occupancy vehicles to and from the airport. Massport bought eight clean-fuel buses for the Silver Line.

The MBTA has also begun offering real-time arrival information on the Silver Line to South Station from each airport terminal.
