Boston's homeless seniors to get new housing
BOSTON—A Massachusetts non-profit organization that works to end homelessness for seniors is announcing the opening of a new residence in the Boston-area.
Hearth, which provides affordable housing, medical and support services to elderly homeless and low-income individuals, will be opening its seventh site at Olmstead Green in Dorchester. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino will join Hearth chief executive officer and president Mark Hinderlie and others at Friday afternoon's ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The new residence will provide 59 apartments, a laundry room on each floor and common areas for the aging homeless population. The facility cost $16 million to build.
According to the organization, elder homelessness creates a set of issues that are different from those of other homeless populations. They say homelessness accelerates aging and increases chronic diseases.
