A Texas man whose murder trial in the stabbing death of his legally blind aunt in Massachusetts ended with a hung jury has pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Prosecutors say that Randall Carpeno Jr., 44, of Austin was sentenced to up to 18 years in prison after pleading guilty to the lesser charge last week in the killing of April Mackie, 56, in her Plainville apartment in March 2009. Carpeno’s April trial ended in a mistrial. His lawyer said his client acted in self-defense, and witnesses testified that Mackie had threatened people with a knife before. A spokesman for the district attorney told The Sun Chronicle that prosecutors agreed to a plea deal ‘‘in the interest of justice,’’ knowing that future juries might hear similar testimony about Mackie’s temperament.
