TEWKSBURY, Mass.—Gov. Deval Patrick and Sen. John Kerry are scheduled to attend the opening of a new research center in Tewksbury.

The ribbon cutting set for Monday will mark the opening of Thermo Fisher's new Scientific Center of Excellence.

The company says the center is intended to help research, develop and manufacture portable analytical instruments.

Thermo Fisher employs 400 workers in Tewksbury and plans to add about 100 jobs at the location over the next five years.

The event is part of a series of Massachusetts life sciences announcements taking place in the days leading up to the BIO International Convention, which opens June 18 at the Massachusetts Convention and Exhibition Center in Boston.

U.S. Rep. John Tierney is also slated to attend the ribbon cutting.
