The Police Department has announced the formation of a new Community Services Unit aimed at eliminating “environmental factors that contribute to crime and compromise the quality of life for our residents,” said Police Chief Robert Bongiorno. The Community Services Unit is responsible for traffic initiatives, crime prevention, public relations, and the support of community problem-solving activities by the department’s patrol officers. The unit supports and sponsors popular programs such as the Citizens Police Academy and Safe Routes to School, courses in bicycle safety, safe driving, community CPR, and alcohol awareness, Council on Aging programs, and child passenger safety seat installations. The Community Services Unit also provides tours, public speaking engagements, and meets with citizens, religious organizations, and business groups. For more information, contact Sergeant Paul Saunders at 781-687-6187, ext.152, or via e-mail at psaunders@bedfordma.gov.
