BILLERICA, Mass.—State police are investigating a single-car crash that killed an on-duty Middlesex County correction officer.

The Middlesex Sheriff's office said that Edward Dillon III of Lowell died in the accident, which happened shortly after 4 a.m. Wednesday on Treble Cove Road in Billerica.

The sheriff's office said the 27-year-old Dillon was conducting a routine check of property around the Middlesex House of Correction and the nearby sheriff's office.

Sheriff Peter Koutoujian said the difficulties and dangers of a correction officer's job are well known, but that doesn't ease the pain and sadness when an officer dies.

State police spokesman David Procopio said a crash reconstruction team was sent to the scene of the accident, but no other details of the accident were released.
