Springfield teen faces murder charge in court
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—A 16-year-old youth has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge in the shooting death of a man outside a house party in Springfield over the weekend.
Authorities had said the teen would be arraigned in juvenile court, but he appeared in Springfield District Court. A judge ordered him held without bail.
Police say 38-year-old Antonio Gonzales was killed early Saturday morning.
The Republican reports (http://bit.ly/PRhOVh) Gonzales was shot in the chest after he attempted to intervene in a disturbance that spilled onto the roadway in front of 305 Bay Street.
Sgt. John Delaney says there was a birthday party involving teens and the suspect came over looking to start trouble. Gonzales attempted to intervene and was shot.
Gonzales' death is the city's seventh homicide of the year.
