WESTBOROUGH, Mass.—The National Grid worker charged with motor vehicle homicide after a backhoe he was hauling fell off a trailer and killed a 70-year-old grandmother in a minivan has had his license suspended.

Jeffrey Fisher of Coventry, R.I., pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Monday in Westborough District Court and was released on personal recognizance.

Authorities allege the 50-year-old Fisher was test driving the truck in August 2011 on I-495 south in Southborough when he lost control. Xiaoyun Jiang (ZHOW'-yoon jang) of Westford was killed.

National Grid employees had complained that the trucks were difficult to control in some situations but Fisher had been ordered to test drive one.

The victim's family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the utility. A National Grid spokesman says the company had no comment on legal proceedings.
