Mass. grants air permit for biofuel plant
BOSTON—A state agency has issued a ruling in favor of a proposed wood-burning power plant in Springfield, drawing criticism from environmental groups and other opponents.
Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Ken Kimmell granted Palmer Renewable Energy an air permit, saying the biomass facility was in compliance with air pollution standards.
Several environmental organizations along with a group of local residents have been fighting the plant, claiming it adds to pollution in a city where childhood asthma rates are already double the statewide average.
In a statement Wednesday, opponents said they would hold the DEP accountable, but did not immediately say whether the decision issued Tuesday would be challenged in court.
The plant faces other challenges, as Springfield's Zoning Board of Appeals has denied construction permits.
