After the assassination of his brother Robert in 1968, Ted emerged as the family's most prominent figure and a powerful Democratic voice in the Senate.
In 1969 tragedy struck again, when Kennedy crashed his car off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island, Martha's Vineyard. Kennedy survived, but Mary Jo Kopechne, a passenger, died.
