Estrada was in the best shape of his life at age 23 when he was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident. A cadet in the Boston Police Academy, Estrada riding home from work when a passing car clipped his back tire, sending him sliding across the concrete toward the bumper of a parked car. He was just two blocks from the South Boston tripledecker where he lived at the time. Waking up next to a curb, Estrada immediately knew he was paralyzed. On the ride to the hospital, he held the hand of a female EMT and refused to let go. "Mentally and physically, the injury is so devastating," he said. "I was completely unsure of how the rest of my life was going to go."
