On Saturday, July 17, 1999, after news broke of another possible family tragedy, reporters surrounded the Kennedy Compound in Hyannis Port. Kennedy was attempting to fly from New Jersey to Martha's Vineyard en route to the wedding of Robert Kennedy's daughter, Rory.

Visibility problems were suspected as a possible cause of the crash.
