Summer of the shark
A 63-year-old Orleans man reported spotting three dogfish sharks while surfing off of an Orleans public beach. Dogfish sharks are mostly harmless, tending to feed on other fish.
His experience differed from another surfer who found himself encircled by two great white sharks off the beaches of northern San Diego County. Two days later, he returned to the same spot with a high-definition camera mounted to a 10-foot pole, which he used to capture footage of the maritime predators.
Shark sightings have become a common occurrence in the region this summer, as the large population of seals in the area have helped attract the predators.
