The US Army patrol fired the shots, fearing the sedan speeding toward them at dusk in the northwest of Iraq was another of the suicide bombers that had recently killed several of their comrades.

Chris Hondros, a photographer for Getty Images, happened to be embedded with the patrol and captured the tragedy in a series of haunting images.
