Bernard Cohen, 60, Secretary of Transportation
For the past two years Cohen worked a long way from Beacon Hill, directing the Federal Transit Administration's $4.55 billion effort to rebuild Lower Manhattan after the Sept. 11 attacks. He also served as the deputy managing director of the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Co., overseeing commuter rail service in the Boston area. Cohen has worked for the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, and the MBTA, where he was a spokesman in the 1980s.
