Carroll is shown here in frame grabs taken on January 17 from a 20-second video released by an unknown group in Iraq calling itself "Brigades of Vengeance" and aired by Qatar-based Al-Jazeera news channel. Carroll was shown alone in the video and speaking, but there was no sound. It was the first time she had been seen since her disappearance January 7.

An accompanying message said the United States had until January 20 to free female prisoners in Iraq or Carroll would be killed.
