Rakan arrived in Boston in September and spent his first couple of weeks at Massachusetts General Hospital. Nurse Karen McDonough carried him to the 18th-floor playroom, accompanied by Aomar Nait-Talb, a MGH employee from Morocco who speaks Arabic. Nait-Talb volunteered as a translator and became Rakan's friend.
