CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire’s two Democratic congresswomen have split on whether to extend a pay freeze for federal workers.

The freeze has been in effect for two years, and the House voted Friday to extend it another nine months.

Rep. Ann McLane Kuster sided with Republicans who backed the measure. The bill’s backers argued that it would save $11 billion in the long run and that economically secure public servants could go a little longer without a raise.

Rep. Carol Shea-Porter sided with most Democrats and the White House in opposing the bill. Though she agrees that congressional pay should be frozen, she supports a modest pay raise for middle class federal workers.end of story marker
