The New Hampshire Republican State Committee’s Twitter feed went off on the state’s Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen’s hockey knowledge Saturday night into this morning following a Bruins win. According to the NH Democratic Party, they did so because Shaheen is a woman.

After the Bruins victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday, Shaheen tweeted:

Later, the NH Republicans tweeted that Shaheen doesn’t “know the first thing about hockey.”

The NH Republicans didn’t leave it at that, going on to call Shaheen a “faux-sports fan,” and “phony” while referencing a couple of sports blunders made by former Mass. Democratic Sen. John Kerry.

According to the state’s Democrats, the NH Republican State Committee’s comments resulted not from Shaheen’s knowledge (or lack thereof) of ice hockey, but from the fact that she is a woman.

“It’s 2014, and the New Hampshire Republican Party is still peddling sexist comments straight out of the 1950s,” Julie McClain, Communications Director for the state’s Democratic party said in a written statement to Boston.com. “You don’t see them questioning any men about their support for the Bruins.”

McClain said that Shaheen enjoys sports, “cheers on the Bruins,” and frequently watches her grandchildren play hockey.

But NH Republicans weren’t buying it. Shaheen, they claimed, was pulling a fast one, trying to trick voters into thinking she cared about the hockey game when they say that is not the case.

“Senator Shaheen must have very little respect for the intelligence of women if she expects us to buy that excuse for her dishonest behavior,” Jennifer Horn, chair of the state’s GOP, said in written response to the claim made by the Democratic party.

The NH Republican State Committee says Shaheen was at a fundraiser in Napa Valley—as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle—and simply could not have been watching the game, though they acknowledged that it’s not necessary to watch a game to enjoy its outcome. They claim that the Twitter response to Shaheen’s message was to point out that she was deceiving Granite Staters.

The state’s GOP has filed a request for the Federal Elections Commission to investigate Shaheen Campaign’s efforts to seek money illegally from third-party organizations.

“While she was in California rubbing shoulders with liberal billionaires at swanky fundraisers, the Shaheen campaign refused to release her schedule and tried to mask her out of state, special interest fundraising trip with phony, staff authored tweets,” Horn said in a written statement to Boston.com. “Now, she is facing serous ethical questions about potentially illegal coordination with third party groups.”

Shaheen’s campaign denied that she was at a fundraiser in California over the weekend. According to a campaign spokeperson, Shaheen was in New Hampshire Saturday while the Bruins were playing.
