LACONIA, N.H. (AP) -- The National Forest Service says it will start controlled spring burning this week in the White Mountain National Forest.
It designated burn areas in the New Hampshire communities of Chatham, Livermore, Albany, Easton, Milan, Berlin and Lancaster; and the Maine towns of Stoneham, Albany, Gilead, Mason and Batchelder's Grant.
The burn sites range from two to 14 acres. About 81 acres of the 780,000-acre forest are planned for burning.
The burns are designed to maintain openings and grassy meadows or shrubby areas essential for wildlife, reduce the amount of dead leaves, brush and wood to reduce wildfire potential and prepare seedbeds for regeneration of certain tree species.
