ROCHESTER, N.H.—At least three family pets died in a one-alarm fire in a Rochester house today.

Officials say the fire began in the basement of a three-story family home on Winkley Farm Road.

Fire fighters were able to control the fire in about 20 minutes. They said three cats died in the fire and a fourth was missing.

A puppy survived the fire, however. More than hour after crews arrived, a fire fighter carried the puppy out of the basement, where it had been hiding under a pinball table.

The fire was confined to the basement and first floor but the entire house suffered heavy smoke damage. No word on the cause.
