N.H. mulls fees to sell animal vaccines

CONCORD, N.H.—Pharmaceutical companies would have to pay a license fee to sell animal vaccines in New Hampshire under proposed legislation.

The House gave preliminary approval to the bill Wednesday and asked its tax writing committee to review the idea before taking a final vote.

The bill would charge the companies $500 for a permanent license and $200 for a temporary one. Lawmakers estimate the fee would raise up to $22,000 a year.

The bill also would eliminate subsidies currently paid to veterinarians for immunizations not vital to the animals or necessary to public health. Rabies vaccinations for dogs and cats would continue to be required. The bill would result in about $30,000 in estimated annual savings from non-essential vaccines that could be used to pay for the state's spay/neuter program.
