CONCORD, N.H.—Gov. John Lynch is urging legislators to support a new tax credit to help attract jobs to New Hampshire's struggling North Country.
The governor told the House Ways and Means Committee on Thursday that wages in far northern Coos County are significantly lower than the rest of the state, the unemployment rate is much higher and the region's economic growth is expected to lag behind the rest of the state.
He said the credit would help bring new, good-paying jobs to the North Country.
The governor said the plan is made even more urgent with paper and pulp mills closing and laying off workers.
The proposal would give businesses that create a job in Coos County that pays at least twice the minimum wage a $1,000 credit against business taxes for five years.![]()
