Remainder of museum destroyed in weekend roof collapse

MONT VERNON, N.H.—A Mont Vernon (New Hampshire) museum that was heavily damaged by a roof collapse last month was destroyed when more of the roof fell in during the weekend.

The roof on the Beaver Brook Farm and Transportation Museum caved in Saturday under the weight of a foot of ice. The owners said nearly two million dollars in artifacts were inside. The collection was not insured.

Owner Ed Gilbert said neighbors helped them shovel snow from several buildings housing artifacts, but they could not break through a foot of ice that was left.

Gilbert said some of the artifacts dated back to the 1600s. They included animated dolls, antique planes and a part of a train. He said little, if anything, is salvageable.
