Blessing or curse: snow destroys one house, saves another
MEREDITH, N.H. --This winter's never-ending snow has been both a blessing and a curse.
In Londonderry, a mound of snow in a front yard helped stop a car from crashing through the wall of a house Friday afternoon.
Julie Colon said the car ended up on the front steps, where it knocked an aluminum support out from under the porch and mangled a trellis. For once, Colon was glad for the season's copious snowfall.
"I've been cursing it all winter, but I'm glad for it, yes," she told WMUR-TV. "Thank God the snow was there."
In Meredith, however, the snow spelled disaster for other homeowners. First, the family's garage collapsed under the weight of snow on the roof last month. Then, on Friday, much of the home was destroyed by a fire that started when a chunk of ice fell and fractured a propane line. Authorities say snow shoveled off the roof was blocking a heating exhaust vent, and when the furnace came on, the fire broke out.
No one was home at the time.
