NASHUA, N.H.—Teachers in Nashua (New Hampshire) are a big step closer to a new contract. Aldermen approved the deal Tuesday night.

All that's left is a signature from Mayor Donnalee Lozeau, and she's expected to approve.

Teachers and the city negotiated for 18 months, with no progress. The union and school negotiators reached the tentative deal the day before teachers threatened to go on strike last month.

Under the deal, teachers will receive pay raises, but will have to handle more of their healthcare costs.
