DOVER, N.H.—Nearly 200 people are being laid off at an AT&T passport call center in Dover (New Hampshire).

AT&T spokesman Walt Sharp confirms employees got layoff notices on Friday, but did not confirm the number, which came from employees and a union representative.

He said the State Department ordered the company to reduce staff because there have been fewer calls to the passport call center.

Employees and the Communications Workers of America said 178 full-time staffers were notified Friday that they will be laid off in two weeks.

Sharp said the State Department also instructed the company to reduce hours. He said the call center will close on weekends and reduce weekday hours by two hours.
