CONCORD, N.H.—New Hampshire is getting older.
New information from the Census Bureau shows the state's population is the fifth oldest in the country.
All six New England states are among the top 10 in median age. New Hampshire's has increased to 39.8 years. The change comes mainly because the number of people 65 and older is rising rapidly and numbers for some younger age groups are flat, declining or rising only slowly.
The Census estimate from last July shows the state has a population of 1.3 million, up about 90,000 since the 2000 census. It also showed New Hampshire's minority population rose at a much faster rate than the population as a whole. Minorities constituted 6.6 percent of the population in 2007, about 51 percent more than in 2000 census. The state's non-Hispanic white population rose 4.3 percent.
Other figures show the number of children continued to decline, along with the number of people in their 30s.
