Defense lawyers challenge charges in NH capital murder case
BRENTWOOD, N.H.—Lawyers for a man facing a capital murder charge in New Hampshire have challenged nearly every charge and indictment against their client.
John Brooks of Las Vegas has been charged with capital murder in connection with the death of Jack Reid of Derry. Prosecutors said he got four men to help him kill Reid in a Deerfield farm in June 2005. Reid's body was found days later in the trunk of a car in Saugus, Massachusetts.
Prosecutors said Brooks believed Reid had stolen from him. But defense attorneys raised questions Monday about each charge against him, including the two capital murder charges -- one of which includes kidnapping -- and a charge of conspiracy to commit capital murder.
The arguments were very technical, with Brooks' lawyers saying that words or sentences were taken out of context.
Judge Robert Lynn said that he would make a ruling on the motions at a later date.
