CONCORD, N.H.—Summer is just starting, but some of New Hampshire's neediest households already are worrying about paying for heat next winter.

Starting Tuesday, households with seniors age 60 and older, people with disabilities and families with children under six can apply for fuel assistance for the coming winter. Everyone else has to wait until Sept. 1 to apply.

Last year, a record 35,000 New Hampshire households got help from the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. State officials are urging anyone worried about paying for heat this winter to apply, even if they don't think they qualify.

This is also the time to winterize homes by adding insulation, replacing or repairing windows and preparing to close off unused areas.
