BERLIN, N.H.—The police department in Berlin, New Hampshire, is encouraging people to turn in old or expired prescription medications to them for disposal.

Berlin Police Chief Pete Morency says the program is designed to curb rising prescription drug use.

People can call the police department and have officers pick up old medications. This can prevent old medications from being left lying around homes.

Morency says more people are reporting stolen prescription medications.

He says prescription drug use and abuse can be just as dangerous as with other kinds of drugs.

The police department has also run disposal programs for old weapons and ammunition.
