PORTSMOUTH, N.H.—Nearly 200 New Hampshire residents will have a special reason to celebrate the Fourth of July from now on.

Amid waving American flags, the 194 people from 57 countries became U.S. citizens on Friday at a ceremony in Portsmouth.

Ali Slim, a mechanic who lives in Salem, said he had yearned to become an American since leaving Lebanon 15 years ago. Now, he says he can be a free man.
