Not all NH towns pay federal mileage rate

CONCORD, N.H.—The high price of energy could affect New Hampshire's municipal budgets in mileage reimbursement rates to workers.

Not all towns are paying employees who use their own cars on town business the 58.5-cents-per-mile rate set this week by the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS increased the rate last week rather than wait until the new year when it usually makes adjustments. The government took the step due to the high price of gas.

Derry, Londonderry and Salem bumped up their rates. Other towns did not, including Atkinson, which left its rate at 37.5 cents. Atkinson selectmen review the rate annually, but so far have stuck with the 2004 IRS rate. Some officials say they won't review the rate until budget season while others discussed an increase but rejected it for now.
