Poll says N.H. Senate race tightens

DURHAM, N.H. --After trailing in polls for a year, Republican Sen. John Sununu has pulled about even with Democratic challenger Jeanne Shaheen in New Hampshire's U.S. Senate race.

A new University of New Hampshire poll gives Shaheen 46 points to 42 for Sununu. The difference is just within the poll's margin of error plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.

Nearly three-quarters of the 475 likely voters surveyed said they have not definitely decided whom they will support. Those still trying to decide include large majorities of both registered Republicans and registered Democrats.

The telephone poll was conducted from July 11-20.

Shaheen, a former three-term governor, led by 12 points in the last UNH poll in the race, in April.

Sununu served three terms in the U.S. House before beating Shaheen for the Senate seat in 2002.
