WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H.—A New Hampshire resort town has replaced almost 50 streetlights in an effort to save money and make things better for stargazers.

Town Manager Mark Decoteau says Waterville Valley's new darker, lights reduce glare that can obscure stars in the night sky.

He says the lights are more focused and have 30 percent lower wattage.

A town ordinance says all new outdoor lighting must be directed generally downward, and not above horizontal.
