GILFORD, N.H.—A doctor and his wife who jumped into action when a boat smashed into rocks near their summer cabin have been honored by the Gilford, N.H., Fire Department.

Dr. Thomas Rock and his wife, Nancy, were awakened on June 15 when the boat crashed into Diamond Island. Thomas Rock rowed to the boat while Nancy Rock called 911 and helped guide rescuers to the hard-to-find spot.

A passenger on the boat, Stephanie Beaudoin, of Meredith, died. The boat driver and another passenger were hurt.

Tuesday, the fire department awarded its first-ever Citizen Life Saving Award to Dr. Rock, and honored his wife's efforts.

Rock said he was just doing what any person would have done. Nancy Rock said the real heroes are the firefighters and EMTs who help people everyday.
