DURHAM, N.H.—A University of New Hampshire study finds that the rates of children living in low-income families are similar in both rural areas and central cities.

The Carsey Institute study found that nearly one half of all children living in rural areas and in central cities lived in a low-income family.

Allison Churilla, a Carsey Institute research associate, says during the past 15 years, as poverty has eased in central cities, rates of low-income children in urban and rural areas have been converging.

She says this implies that rural areas have been less responsive to changes that have benefited low-income families in central cities, reaffirming the unique policy needs of children in these two distinct areas.
