MANCHESTER, N.H.—A group pushing for tax caps in several New Hampshire communities has gone to court in Manchester to force the issue onto the ballot in that city in November.

The New Hampshire Advantage Coalition wants to limit budget increases in city spending to the rate of inflation and population growth. The cap could be overridden by a two-thirds vote of the governing body.

After Manchester alderman voted Friday against putting the proposal on the ballot, coalition members went to Hillsborough County Superior Court on Monday to ask a judge to force the city to include it. The board of aldermen was scheduled to meet Monday night to discuss scheduling a special election.

The New Hampshire Advantage Coalition plans to file a similar request in Merrimack County Superior Court on Friday to get a tax cap question onto the ballot in Concord.
