CONCORD, N.H.—New Hampshire's attorney general and insurance commissioner are warning of an auto recall scam.

The state says residents of the Midwest have been receiving postcards with what appear to be genuine safety recall notices. It turns out there were no safety recalls, and the toll free number on the card is for a Missouri company offering extended vehicle warranties. The Better Business Bureau says the company is not affiliated with auto makers or dealerships and has a pattern of unresolved complaints.

The attorney general and insurance commissioner advise New Hampshire residents to check with dealers if they receive a recall notice and do some research before buying extended warranties through such an offer.
