MONTPELIER, Vt.—A former U.S. ambassador is disputing allegations that he kept secret his financial interest in Iraqi oil fields.

Peter Galbraith worked for DNO -- a Norweigian oil company -- before he advised Kurdistan leaders in their oil negotiations with Iraq in 2005. On Thursday, the New York Times reported that Galbraith stood to earn more than $100 million from his interests in a Kurdish oil field.

The 58-year-old diplomat, who was fired by the United Nations in September after clashing with the special envoy to Afghanistan over the first presidential vote there, says he revealed his business interests in Kurdistan to the U.N. before he returned to government service this year and that he engaged in them as a private citizen.
