CONCORD, N.H.—New Hampshire courts are closing for the day to save money.

All 78 courts in 40 locations statewide will be closed Friday. It's not the first time: Courts closed April 2 and plan to close May 28, July 2, Aug. 6 and Sept. 3, also to save money.

The closures are in response to a request by Gov. John Lynch to cut judicial expenditures by $3.1 million during fiscal years 2010 and 2011.

The justices also have designated additional dates on which courts could be shuttered to achieve additional savings.

Members of the union representing most state workers who work in the court system will be at Manchester District Court to protest proposed additional cuts to the court budget.
