PORTSMOUTH, N.H.—Authorities say 17 people are on board a Greyhound bus being blocked by police and fire officials in downtown Portsmouth after a report of a suspicious device being found on board.

Portsmouth Police Capt. Mike Schwartz said someone on the bus made a 911 call and reported an explosive device after they arrived in Portsmouth. He said police are in contact with people on the bus, but it was unclear why they remained on board.

The driver, who police say got off the bus, is being questioned.

Police have closed streets and evacuated area businesses including a Hilton hotel in the busy downtown Portsmouth area.

The state police explosives disposal unit and the FBI are on scene.

The bus had left Bangor, Maine, and was en route to Boston.
