KITTERY, Maine—Some people who live on islands off the coast of Maine and New Hampshire have decided to play it safe and return to the mainland before the seas are churned up by Hurricane Earl.

York County Emergency Management Agency Director Robert Bohlmann says a ferry picked up some people living on the Isles of Shoals on Friday. Hundreds of others are cutting short their vacations on Maine's islands.

Located about 10 miles from the mainland, the Isles of Shoals are a series of rocky islands, part of which are in Maine, part of which are in New Hampshire.

Bohlmann says some homes on the rocky islands belong to fishermen who have no intention of leaving. He says there's no legal requirement for anyone to evacuate.
