DURHAM, N.H.—A new poll shows Democratic Gov. John Lynch has a wide lead over Republican rival John Stephen in Lynch's bid for a fourth term.

The WMUR Granite State Poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire released Friday shows Lynch ahead with 51 percent, while Stephen had 34 percent.

Fifty-eight percent of likely voters said they approve of the way Lynch is handling his job and 61 percent had a favorable opinion of him.

Stephen remains largely unknown with 24 percent having a favorable opinion of him while 47 percent said they did not know enough to say.

The telephone poll of 515 likely voters was conducted Sept. 23-29. The sampling margin of error was 4.3 percentage points.
