BARRINGTON, N.H.—A German shepherd in Barrington, N.H., is part of a project that could end up helping wounded veterans.

Four years ago, Alexis chewed her right rear leg off at the knee to free herself from a trap. She was later adopted by a Barrington couple, who have been working with veterinary specialists in hopes of having her fitted with a high-tech prosthetic leg.

The Portsmouth Herald reports that a veterinarian in Tennessee is developing an implant prosthesis for Alexis, which would involve implanting a titanium piece into her knee joint from which her new leg will be attached. At the same time, the veterinarian's engineering team is working with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to use the research for human applications.
