PORTSMOUTH, N.H.—New Hampshire's Democratic U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen says she's going to push for federal funding of a project to build a new bridge across the Piscatagua River between Portsmouth and Kittery, Maine.

The $20 million in federal funding for the $90 million bridge project was approved last fall, but it was cut last month in the budget passed by the U.S. House. Both states are ready to spend their share of the project, which is supposed to break ground in mid-2012.

On Monday in Portsmouth, Shaheen called the proposed federal cuts "reckless" and irresponsible."

Last week, Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte urged Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to expedite an environmental review of the project so his agency could order it to be funded.
