BELMONT, N.H.—Fire officials say a Belmont, N.H., family awakened by a barking dog escaped the flames, but their house was heavily damaged.

WMUR-TV says firefighters were called to the Middle Route home at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday. When they arrived, a garage was engulfed in flames and the fire was spreading into the attached home.

Firefighters from Belmont and Laconia worked quickly to keep the fire from spreading and were able to save most of the house, but the flames caused about $100,000 damage.

The name of the family living there was not released. The cause of the fire was undetermined and not suspicious., but officials say it appeared it started near a wood stove.
