CONCORD, N.H.—New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte has signed onto to an effort to set aside a day to honor military veterans who have served in Afghanistan.

Ayotte is a co-sponsor of a bipartisan resolution to designate Oct. 7, 2012, as "Operation Enduring Freedom Veterans Day."

The date marks the 11th anniversary of the war. More than half a million American military members have served in Afghanistan since Oct. 7, 2001.

The other sponsors are Republican Sen. Mike Enzi of Wyoming and Democratic Sens. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Mark Begich of Alaska. They got the idea from a Wyoming native who was shot by sniper in Afghanistan and wanted to honor those still serving.
