CONCORD, N.H.—Grab a fishing pole and some bait and leave the worries behind if you don't have a New Hampshire fishing license, because it's Free Fishing Day.

The Saturday event kicks off National Fishing and Boating week.

Residents and non-residents may fish for free, but must observe other Fish and Game Department regulations on size and quantity limits. The only exception is that a license and special permit are required to fish for brood stock Atlantic salmon on the Merrimack and lower Pemigewasset rivers.

Free fishing applies to the state's 975 lakes and ponds and 12,000 miles of rivers and streams, as well as to saltwater.
