FRANCONIA, N.H.—Officials say a group of hikers from Vermont that included four young children wasn't prepared for an outing that ended with them getting lost and needing help in New Hampshire's White Mountains.

Fish and Game Department officers were called at 9:15 p.m. Friday in response to a report that Josie Rogers and Christopher Kangers of St. Johnsbury, Vt., and four children -- ages 2, 5, 6 and 8 -- were lost on Little Haystack Mountain in Franconia.

Officials say the group was helped by three other hikers until conservation officers reached them slightly below the mountain summit. They didn't get to the mountain bottom until 4:30 a.m. Saturday.

Authorities say the group didn't have navigational tools or appropriate clothing or footwear for the conditions.
